Kenya’s fixed broadband market has grown by 42.9% to 2.14 million by June 2025 according to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA). This is due to increasing demand for high-speed internet, competition among Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and expansion of national fiber infrastructure.
Key Drivers of Growth: Fiber and Wireless
The growth in Kenya’s broadband market is driven by fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fixed wireless connections. FTTH is the leading technology with over 1.1 million subscriptions while fixed wireless has 721,000 connections. These two are meeting the demand for reliable high speed internet in both residential and business markets.
Also fiber-to-the-office (FTTO) is growing steadily with 101,677 subscriptions indicating a growing trend of businesses opting for high capacity dedicated internet connections.
Internet Speeds and Packages
When it comes to internet speed, most users are going for mid-tier packages. Over 870,000 subscriptions are in the 10–30 Mbps range while over 717,000 are in the 2–10 Mbps bracket.
On the other hand ultra-high speed above 1 Gbps is a niche offering mainly used by businesses and offices on fiber networks, showing demand for faster internet among corporate users.
Safaricom Leads the Market
Despite the competition among ISPs, Safaricom still leads Kenya’s fixed broadband market with 735,749 subscriptions which is 34.3% of the market.
But Jamii Telecommunications (Faiba) has emerged as a strong challenger with 20.6% market share. This makes Faiba Safaricom’s main competitor in the fixed broadband space.Others are Zuku (Wananchi Group) with 12.7% of the market and Poa Internet (12.5%) which has been growing by targeting estates and peri-urban areas. Ahadi Wireless has 7.5% while smaller players like Vilcom (4.1%), Mawingu (3.6%) and Starlink (0.8%) are adding to the growing number of ISPs in Kenya.
Government Initiatives Driving Expansion
The National Optic Fiber Backbone Initiative (NOFBI) and county level connectivity programs are driving broadband adoption in Kenya. These government backed initiatives are lowering the barriers for ISPs to expand into unserved areas, more people can now access high speed internet.
Outlook for Kenya’s Broadband Market
As e-commerce, education and remote work becomes more important, Kenya’s fixed broadband market will continue to grow fast and be one of the fastest growing segments in the ICT sector.
