Soon, Kenyans applying for critical government documents such as national ID cards, birth certificates and other personal records will be able to get same day processing at Huduma Centres.

On July 24, Huduma Kenya Secretariat (HKS) announced the introduction of Multi-Biometric Identification (MBI) systems and live capture machines in selected service centres. This digital shift will eliminate long waiting periods and enhance public service delivery.

A Game Changer for Government Services

Currently, getting official documents through government channels takes days or even weeks. This inefficiency has been a major challenge especially in areas with high population density where demand is high.

The upcoming deployment of MBI systems will reduce processing time significantly. According to HKS, once the system is operational, citizens will be able to apply and collect certain documents within hours—a big improvement from the current timelines.

How Multi-Biometric Identification Works

MBI is a robust identity verification method that captures multiple types of biometric data including:

  • Fingerprints

  • Facial recognition

By combining these data, the system is more secure and accurate and minimizes risks of:

  • Fraudulent registrations

  • Duplicate entries in government databases

  • Human error in manual data entry

When paired with live capture machines which record biometric information and photographs in real time, the process is faster and more reliable. These machines allow staff to capture high quality data on the spot eliminating the need for follow ups or repeat visits.

Pilot Phase to Start in High Traffic Centres

Although the government has not given a specific date, HKS said the pilot will start with pilot programs in selected high volume Huduma Centres. This phased approach will allow the agency to test, gather feedback and resolve technical issues before a national rollout.

Huduma Kenya’s Digital Transformation Journey

Since its launch, Huduma Kenya has been a key player in public service reforms. With over 70 services under one roof, Huduma Centres have made government services more accessible to ordinary Kenyans.

The introduction of real time biometric capture and identification is the latest step in this digital transformation journey. It’s a broader commitment to modernize public services and reduce bureaucracy.

What’s in it for Kenyans

For the ordinary Kenyan:

  • Quicker service

  • Accurate data

  • Less time and cost to access services

The biometric and live capture technology is a step towards more responsive governance. If the pilot works, Kenyans will see shorter queues, faster turnarounds and a smoother experience at Huduma Centres across the country.
