Samsung has ended software support for the Galaxy S20 series, which means the five-year update cycle for these 2020 flagships has come to an end. This affects the Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra and they will no longer receive security patches or feature updates from April 2025 onwards.

End of Support: What’s Changed?

Originally Samsung promised three Android OS upgrades and four years of security updates for the S20 series. They extended security support to five years and switched to quarterly patches in April 2024. The last update was in March 2025 and that’s the end of the line for these devices.

Galaxy S20 FE Still Supported – For Now

The Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition) is an exception to this announcement. Released later in 2020, the S20 FE will still receive quarterly updates, but its support will also end soon.

What This Means for Users

Although the Galaxy S20 devices are still working, the end of software support means security and performance risks over time. Without future patches you’ll be more vulnerable to:

  • New security threats

  • Apps not compatible

  • Missing out on new features or improvements

It won’t affect daily usage right away but over the next year or two these devices will become outdated especially as developers stop optimizing apps for older versions of Android.

Time to Upgrade?

If you prioritize device security, performance and long term app support now is the time to upgrade. Samsung’s newer flagships like the Galaxy S23 and S24 series offer:

  • Up to seven years of software support

  • Better performance and battery life

  • Major camera and AI improvements

  • Better display and connectivity features

Samsung also has trade-in programs and financing plans to make the upgrade more accessible for loyal users who want to stay within the ecosystem.

Samsung’s New Support Policy

Samsung’s extended update commitment is part of a broader industry trend towards longer device lifespans and sustainability. The Galaxy S24 series for instance gets seven years of Android updates and security patches which is in line with Google and Apple’s new standards. This also means you get more value from your device and reduce electronic waste.

In a nutshell:

  • Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra are no longer supported from April 2025.

  • S20 FE still gets updates but not for long.

  • No updates mean security risks and app incompatibility.

  • Samsung now offers 7 years support for newer devices like S24.

  • Upgrade to maintain security, performance and app access.
