Microsoft has wrapped up its Global AI Tour in Africa with the continent’s largest AI conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The event demonstrated the growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) across industries in Kenya and Africa at large.

Conference Highlights

Developers, business leaders, policymakers and Microsoft executives came together to talk about the impact of AI.

Phyllis Migwi, Country Manager for Microsoft Kenya, highlighted the importance of sustainable technological growth in Kenya’s digital future.

“Kenya has made some good progress in AI and machine learning. The AI Tour is a platform to showcase these successes and show how organizations can use AI. Our goal is to empower individuals and businesses in Kenya and beyond,” she said.

AI and Economic Growth

AI is a game changer that can reshape Africa’s economy. Analysts forecast that AI can add 50% to Africa’s GDP by 2030 if Africa takes 10% of the global AI market. Additionally, research from IDC says businesses can get $3.50 for every $1 invested in AI making it a very attractive investment for African businesses.

AI Skilling for Kenya’s Workforce

To ensure Kenya maximizes AI, Microsoft has launched a massive AI and cybersecurity training program to skill 1 million people. This aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the national Digital Masterplan.

“As AI is transforming industries, Kenya must equip its workforce for this new digital era. Over the last 5 years, Microsoft has skilled over 4 million young Africans through various programs,” Migwi noted.

Infrastructure and Digital Access

Recognizing the need for digital infrastructure, Microsoft has been expanding internet access through its Airband Initiative including Project Mawingu. By end of 2024, Mawingu’s network was live in 31 counties in Kenya, reaching 9.7 million people. Mawingu has improved internet access in schools, healthcare facilities and small businesses.

AI and Cloud in Kenya

To further aid AI adoption, Microsoft is working with G42, a global technology company, to deliver secure, high-speed cloud and AI services in Kenya. As part of a larger $1 billion investment, this partnership will create a digital ecosystem to drive AI innovation and economic growth.

“For Kenya to lead in AI transformation, you need scalable, secure and high-speed cloud services. Our partnership with G42 will provide the digital foundation for this,” added Migwi.

Kenyan Startups and AI

Kenyan startups and enterprises are already using AI to solve some of Africa’s biggest challenges. From healthcare to retail supply chain to banking customer experience, AI solutions are transforming many sectors.
