By 2027, Microsoft will endeavor to:
- Enable economic growth and job creation by empowering SMEs with AI-enabled tools and skilling;
- Enhance access to quality education by integrating AI into curricula, resources for teachers and students, and infusing AI capacity among faculty members; and
- Transform government services through effective leveraging and usage of AI, driving efficiency and service delivery.
Large Scale Impact Strategic Partnerships
The program leveraged Kenya Skills Hub, Smart Academy, among other designed programs like Ajira and Jitume centers to perform this training across the country. In scaling the impact, Microsoft is partnering with:
- Ministry of Information Communication and the Digital Economy (MOICT)
- Public Service Commission (PSC)
- Industry organizations such as KEPSA, Stanbic Kenya Foundation, and Africa Centre for Women in ICT (ACWICT)
In other words, this is democratizing AI skills for youth and the most marginalized communities to bring about equality; this, therefore, underpins the growth of a pipeline of cybersecurity talents that Microsoft intends to do in Kenya with Cyber Shujaa and other partners.
Investing in Education and Research
To ensure sustainable development in AI education, Microsoft is set to:
- Launch AI University Tours and faculty immersion programs aimed at strengthening AI capacity in higher education.
In this regard, catalyst programs will be established for AI Research, as well as AI Innovation Labs at strategic universities. AI and cybersecurity education in schools from K-12 to vocational training institutions and public universities. These efforts will create a pipeline for much-needed AI talent, placing Kenya at the forefront of innovation in AI on the continent.
Transforming Critical Industries Beyond Education and Skilling
The key sectors where the initiative is focused include agriculture, financial services, and public service:
- Agriculture: Empower farmers and agribusinesses with the use of AI to perform more productive activities.
- Financial Services: Banking cybersecurity is improved with focused training in conjunction with organizations such as the Kenya Bankers Association.
The Africa Development Centre is partnering through this initiative with Serianu and United States International University Africa to upskill 100 youth in cybersecurity, with a critical shortage experienced within skilled professionals in this industry.
Supporting the Government's Digital Goals
The partnership between Microsoft, the Government of Kenya, and other agencies like UNDP will help train 300,000 public servants during the next three years in a streamlined way of targeting capacity in digital policy and leadership. This includes an intensive training of 50,000 policymakers and organizational leaders within the first year alone, surely to revolutionize the way the public sector operates and delivers services.
