Twitter CEO Elon Musk has announced that the platform will soon be introducing voice and video chat features. This new feature will allow users to communicate with anyone on the platform without sharing phone numbers. Musk also criticized Meta’s WhatsApp messaging service, stating that it “cannot be trusted.”

On top of voice and video chat features, Twitter is expected put the social media in direct competition with other popular messaging services like Messenger, Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp. Musk also announced that Twitter will start encrypting direct messages to protect users’ privacy.

Since purchasing Twitter for $44 billion last year, Musk has implemented various changes to the platform in seemingly impulsive ways. He has expressed his desire to create an all-purpose “X” application that combines messaging, payments, and other features.
